Description
keyboard_arrow_downA wood wall light rarely distinguishes itself by what it does with stone, and this one manages it. Its wall base in terrazzo, scattered with pale mineral chips, carries a piece of solid walnut and a metal frame. At 20 cm in diameter it fixes to a wall or to a ceiling.
Terrazzo is a material with character: mineral chips set in a matrix form a speckled surface that is never twice the same. On this model it makes the wall base, the part that meets the plaster and carries everything else. Above it, solid walnut takes over with its deep tone, and the metal frame holds the assembly. This wood wall light therefore works on a contrast of materials, the mineral cool and graphic against the timber warm and smooth. Dimensions are 20 cm in diameter by 20 cm high, enough volume to assert a presence without imposing a mass. A wood wall light of this diameter positions easily above a console or at the end of a corridor, where a heavier fitting would have looked like an obstruction. The format is called architectural because its strength comes from geometry rather than ornament. You can read it as a small wall sculpture that plays with light and shadow, which it does particularly well in halls, stairwells and bedrooms that want a fitting to be noticed. Set alone on a clear wall, this wood wall light draws the eye without stealing it from the rest of the room, and it accompanies a contemporary scheme as readily as a rawer one of polished concrete and lime render. A wood wall light this self-contained also solves the awkward wall that nothing else quite fits.
On the technical side, this fitting takes a standard E26/E27 Edison screw (ES) cap, which leaves the bulb to you. Recommended output is 40 W maximum, or the LED equivalent, and the bulb is not included. This wood wall light works with an external dimmer, also not supplied, for lowering the light in the evening. Installation runs through integrated wiring, usable on a wall or on a ceiling, so you choose the orientation the room calls for. One point deserves underlining: the fitting is rated for damp locations, which admits bathrooms and covered outdoor positions, with the exact siting left to your electrician. For a solid timber fitting that tolerance of moisture is a genuine advantage, because a rated wood wall light means not giving up the warmth of walnut in a bathroom. Terrazzo, solid timber and metal are rarely brought together anywhere moisture is expected, which says something about the care taken over it. Compliance with North American, Australian, European and Middle Eastern standards also allows it on an international project. The standard cap makes future replacement easy as well, so a wood wall light in this class stays practical to keep, with no dependence on a proprietary light source, which is more than can be said for most integrated fittings. At 20 cm deep it is a fitting to measure against a narrow landing before ordering.
The bulb decides the atmosphere. A warm LED, within the 40 W equivalent, brings out the walnut and warms the pale chips in the terrazzo. A more neutral light would read as graphic but less welcoming, and in a room you live in the first option is the kinder one. The terrazzo shifts with the light it is given, which is worth testing before you settle on a bulb. With a dimmer you can take the output down as the evening goes on. A wood wall light on a dimmer becomes a reading light after dark and then a night light once the house settles. On a narrow wall, fit one wood wall light high up so that it acts as a focal point. On a wider wall, two spaced evenly give a rhythm, and a pair is how a wood wall light of this diameter is most often bought. On a ceiling it replaces an ordinary flush ceiling light in a corridor or a small room and brings something more considered. Play on the contrast with smooth pale walls, which let the terrazzo base and the walnut speak for themselves. A wood wall light of this kind gains as much from a neutral ground as from a restrained mineral scheme around it.
Architectural, full of material and rated for damp locations, this wood wall light brings terrazzo, walnut and metal together at 20 cm across. It is waiting for the wall or the ceiling that will show it properly. Its walnut, its terrazzo and its adjustable light promise it a long stay in the room you give it.
