Description
keyboard_arrow_downAn alabaster wall light 32 cm in diameter soon takes the place of a lit picture. Its shade in real alabaster carved from the solid block passes a veiled light and changes through the hours of the day. It is meant for dry interiors and for quiet, well-kept rooms.
The shade of this fitting is cut from a block of real alabaster: it is not an assembly but a single piece of stone shaped by hand. The consequence is visible to the naked eye, since the veining, the tone and the translucency vary from piece to piece. This alabaster wall light is therefore a singular object with no exact copy anywhere, and that is its value to anyone after something other than a standardised product. The format is generous, 32 cm in diameter by 17 cm high: wide and shallow, it suggests a half-moon, a disc set against the surface. On a clear wall it holds a significant place and draws the eye without needing anything else around it. An alabaster wall light of this diameter talks naturally to a large round mirror or a low console, which follow the same logic of volume. Alabaster filters light through its own substance: you watch the veins come forward, the colour warm and the centre fill with a milky halo. That is beyond the reach of a fabric shade or ordinary glass. In a lounge, above a console, in a bedroom or a hall, this alabaster wall light offers a soft ambient light that takes the hardness out of the corners and makes the room more enveloping. On a wide wall it earns its keep as the only decoration needed, which is a fair trade in a room where the furniture is already doing enough.
Technically, this piece carries a standard E12 or E14 small Edison screw (SES) cap, a common format for small bulbs that are easy to find in any British shop and easy to replace. The accepted supply is 110 to 240 V AC, which makes it compatible with most networks. Installation uses integrated wiring, and the specification recommends leaving the connection to an electrician for a safe and tidy result. A well-connected alabaster wall light is a fitting you install once and never return to, after which only the shade asks for attention. The fitting is intended for indoor use in a dry atmosphere, so avoid the bathroom, a steamy kitchen and anywhere outdoors. That restriction protects the stone and the life of the whole piece, and it points the alabaster wall light naturally towards bedrooms, lounges, corridors and halls. Remember that the nature of the stone means differences between pieces: veining, tone and translucency are never identical. Rather than a fault, that is the guarantee of a genuine material. Knowing it before buying lets you choose this alabaster wall light for what it is, a piece with character to be fitted with care in a suitable setting. A disc of stone 32 cm across wants a fixing chosen for the wall it is going into, rather than the plug that came in the box. That is a conversation for the first visit, not the last one.
The wide, shallow shape calls for particular positions. Above a headboard it gives a muted light that suits reading at the end of the day. In a corridor it works as a marker; in a hall it welcomes gently. Choose the bulb for the atmosphere you want: a warm light brings out the cream and honey tones of the alabaster, while a more neutral one picks out the veining precisely, within the limits of the E14 cap. Set the alabaster wall light at a height where the eye does not look straight into the middle of the shade, to avoid glare. On a pale wall it blends delicately; on a dark one it becomes the main point of light in the room. A 32 cm alabaster wall light even finds a place above a desk or a reading chair, where it makes a lit corner without adding anything to the floor. Set it against natural materials, timber, linen or ceramic, for a coherent scheme. If the room is large, consider two spaced apart: they will not be identical, and that is precisely the appeal of a scheme built on material rather than repetition.
Singular in its veining and its translucency, this alabaster wall light brings a disc of veiled light to the wall. Give it a dry room and a good electrician, and it will repay the care.
