An opal glass pendant light remains the safe choice above a table. Its white globe, opacified in the body of the glass, spreads the light with no hot spot and no visible bulb. This selection gathers five models, from the classic spherical globe to compositions that pair the glass with stone and wood.
Opal glass is neither acid-etched nor sandblasted. Its whiteness comes from the body of the material itself, obtained by adding opacifiers at the melt, and not from a surface treatment that can wear or scratch. The direct consequence is that an opal glass pendant light diffuses the same way after ten years of use. The other advantage is visual comfort. Above a table the fitting sits at eye level; an opal glass globe makes the source vanish entirely, where smoked or clear glass leaves the filament showing and tires the eye over the course of a meal.
The spherical globe is the reference form in this collection of opal glass pendant lights: timeless, it works alone above a round table and equally well in a run of two or three along a kitchen island. Some models set the globe on a brass-finished mount for a frankly retro turn, while others pair it with a base in real travertine or solid wood, so that the stone or the wood supplies the presence while the glass takes charge of the light. There are also variants in matt and acid-etched white glass, which render very closely, and the product page states the exact nature of each.
Aim for a globe diameter close to a third of the width of your table: 30 to 40 cm for a round table of 120 cm, less if you are running several pendant lights in a line. Mounting height is the same as for any table fitting, 75 to 85 cm between the top and the bottom of the globe, and the British habit of a shade bottom at 2.10 m above finished floor level still applies anywhere people walk. Above a kitchen island, go up to 90 cm to keep the working space clear. Opal glass has one practical advantage that often goes unmentioned: it wipes clean with a cloth and holds neither dust nor cooking grease the way a fabric shade does.
The source changes the result completely. An opal glass pendant light shows the colour of the light right through: a cool bulb, beyond 4000 K, gives the globe a wan and unwelcoming look. Choose a warm colour temperature, between 2700 and 3000 K, which warms the white of the glass. On bulb caps, the small globes generally take a G9 capsule, the more generous ones an E27 Edison screw (ES). Several models are dimmable, which lets you move from mealtime light to late-evening light without touching the fitting.
Every product page gives the diameter of the globe, the bulb cap, the wiring and drop and the materials paired with the glass. For a more mineral translucency, look at our alabaster pendant lights as well.
