An opal glass pendant light in the schoolhouse tradition suits a kitchen, a counter or a living room. Its milky opal glass dome and its aged brass finish recall the workshop lights of an earlier time, drawn with today’s precision. It comes in two sizes, 20 and 30 cm across.

A schoolhouse opal glass pendant light in two sizes

The schoolhouse form has lasted for decades because its idea is simple: a domed shade, a diffuse light and an outline that is recognised at once. This opal glass pendant light takes up those rules with a shade of milky opal glass of premium quality, which softens the light and avoids direct glare from the source. There are two sizes. The large model is 30 cm across and 27 cm high, and the small model 20 cm across and 18 cm high. The large one holds its own over a table or a counter, and the small one fits an entrance, a corner of a kitchen or a row of several pieces. An opal glass pendant light of this family suits old and new settings alike: exposed brick, vintage tiles, raw timber, white walls. The opal glass hardly tints the light, and the metal fitting in an aged brass finish, with visible screws, adds a warm gleam and a precise ring that gives the dome of the opal glass pendant light its structure. Opal glass is tinted through its thickness, so the glow looks even from every side and the lamp inside is never seen as a bright point. In a restaurant, a café or an open kitchen, it sets a friendly mood as soon as it is lit, without crowding the rest of the room. The dome reads as a small milky moon over the table.

Technical details of the opal glass pendant light

The metal structure and fixings of this opal glass pendant light have an aged brass finish, and the screws are left visible. The cable is a twisted brown vintage fabric cord, adjustable for suspension, and the specification notes that the fitting can be used as a pendant or as a ceiling light. The light source is an integrated or compatible LED, and the opal glass pendant light runs on low voltage, 36 V or less, which is a point for your electrician: low-voltage fittings are connected through a suitable driver, so have the installation planned before you buy. The specification also notes compatibility with the Mijia Smart system, for those who run their lights from a smart ecosystem. The glass of this opal glass pendant light is milky opal, and the metal is a finish rather than solid brass, so treat the surface gently and wipe it with a soft dry cloth when the light is off. The two sizes share the same construction, so a small model over a counter and a large model over a table will look like members of one family. The specification names its intended settings: a restaurant, a kitchen, a counter or a living space. An opal glass pendant light of this kind is therefore a practical fitting as well as a decorative one, with a clear description of where it belongs.

Choosing the size of your opal glass pendant light

Choose the size by the surface below. The 30 cm model suits a dining table, a counter or an island; the 20 cm model suits an entrance, a corner or a bedside, and works well in a line of three or four over a long counter. Then check the height of the opal glass pendant light. Under a typical 2.40 m ceiling, with the lowest point at 2.10 m above the finished floor, there are 30 cm to spare. The small model, at 18 cm, leaves room for a short drop, but the large, at 27 cm, uses nearly all of it, so the large opal glass pendant light is better kept over a table, where it can hang lower, than over a walkway. An opal glass pendant light in a row looks best with an even spacing of about one shade width. The aged brass finish suits dark timber and brick, and the milky glass suits white tiles and pale walls. Keep the cable of the opal glass pendant light tidy, so the twisted fabric reads as part of the design, and wipe the glass with a soft cloth when cool. In a kitchen, opal glass wipes clean easily, and a row of three small domes over a worktop gives an even light with no hard shadows.

Milky opal glass, an aged brass finish and a twisted fabric cord: this opal glass pendant light brings a workshop classic into a modern home. Choose the size, plan the low-voltage supply and let the dome glow.

Light decides whether a room makes you want to stay. Each light is chosen for its material and for what it does with it.

    How we choose a light

    A light for every room

A hallway, a bedhead or a table each call for a different light. Our collections are organised by use.

    Stone, not an imitation

The market is full of painted resin that imitates marble. Our travertines and alabasters are cut from stone: no two pieces are identical.

A third of our lights have a built-in LED: nothing to buy. The others take a standard bulb, which is generally not supplied. The bulb cap type is on the product page.

Will my stone light be identical to the photo?

    keyboard_arrow_down

No, and that is deliberate: travertine and alabaster are real stones, and the veining differs from one piece to the next. The shape and dimensions, however, are as specified.

Can I install a light in a bathroom?

Some models. The ‘bathroom zone rating’ entry appears on the relevant product pages — without it, keep the light for dry rooms.
