A 12 cm alabaster wall light standing 30 cm tall is a small source of light with a good deal of character. Its shade is carved from solid alabaster, with veining and translucency that belong to that piece alone. This alabaster wall light suits a considered interior where the brief is clarity rather than brightness.

An alabaster wall light carved from solid stone

What distinguishes this alabaster wall light is that the shade is cut from the block, not applied as a skin over a former. The shape is worked into the stone itself, which gives it visual weight and a real presence on the wall. Lit, the stone glows from within and its veins come forward; unlit, it reads as a pale mineral form. Two examples of this alabaster wall light will never be strictly identical, and that is rather the point of buying stone instead of a moulding. At 12 cm in diameter it stays compact, so it will take a return wall, the space above a console or a position either side of a mirror, and wall lights either side of something are almost always bought in twos. The 30 cm height gives an elongated silhouette that lends the wall a little verticality without crowding it. The light this alabaster wall light gives is enveloping, closer to a glow than to task lighting, so it layers with a table lamp rather than standing in for one. In a bedroom, a lounge or an entrance hall, this alabaster wall light creates a point of softness, and its mineral surface sits well with timber, ceramic and linen. The eye settles on the grain, and the wall gains a quiet relief that no paint colour can supply. In a small room that relief does more work than a larger fitting would.

Alabaster wall light: the figures for your electrician

Technically, this alabaster wall light takes a G9 capsule, a compact cap chosen to suit its small format. It runs on AC 110-240V, which covers the usual domestic supplies without an adaptor. The wiring is integrated: the hard-wired connection is made directly to the supply at the wall, and that step belongs to a qualified electrician. The dimensions of this alabaster wall light are those of an elongated wall format, 12 cm in diameter by 30 cm high, with a shade that carries the whole piece and a fitting kept deliberately quiet behind it. A diameter of 12 cm counts for something in a British hallway, where the width of a fitting is the difference between walking past it and catching it with a sleeve. This alabaster wall light is intended for dry indoor use, which puts it in living rooms, bedrooms and circulation space, away from damp. Note too that the veining, the tone and the translucency vary from one piece to the next: that is the signature of a natural material rather than a fault, and we treat it as a quality in its own right. An alabaster wall light carved from the block asks only to be handled with care and dusted gently. Before ordering, measure the position and check the 30 cm height against the furniture and frames around it, then find the cable outlet on the wall. None of this is complicated, but all of it is easier settled before the fitting arrives than after.

Where to put a 12 cm alabaster wall light

Think about the positions where light should accompany rather than dominate. A pair either side of a headboard makes a calm symmetry; a single alabaster wall light is enough to finish the far end of a corridor or give a bare wall some relief. In an entrance hall it offers a warm welcome without glare. In a lounge, near an armchair, it gives the sort of low light that suits conversation. Because the stone varies, look closely at the photographs and accept that your piece will be its own. If you are undecided about the position of this alabaster wall light, mark the wall in pencil, look at the area at different hours, then adjust. Daylight changes what alabaster looks like, and a position that seems obvious at noon can read quite differently at six. Remember that the fitting is hard-wired, so plan the cable outlet before fixing anything and bring in an electrician. Well chosen, a 12 cm alabaster wall light becomes the detail that gives a whole room its character without weighing it down. It suits a contemporary scheme and a more traditional one equally, provided you want stone in the room.

Compact, natural and cut from stone, this alabaster wall light adds a delicate light to the wall it is given. Choose yours: every piece is unique, much as your way of living with it is your own.

Light decides whether a room makes you want to stay. Each light is chosen for its material and for what it does with it.

    A light for every room

A hallway, a bedhead or a table each call for a different light. Our collections are organised by use.

    Stone, not an imitation

The market is full of painted resin that imitates marble. Our travertines and alabasters are cut from stone: no two pieces are identical.

A third of our lights have a built-in LED: nothing to buy. The others take a standard bulb, which is generally not supplied. The bulb cap type is on the product page.

Will my stone light be identical to the photo?

No, and that is deliberate: travertine and alabaster are real stones, and the veining differs from one piece to the next. The shape and dimensions, however, are as specified.

Can I install a light in a bathroom?

Some models. The ‘bathroom zone rating’ entry appears on the relevant product pages — without it, keep the light for dry rooms.
