This walnut wall light sets a solid wood base in a walnut finish against a curved gold arm and a shade in blown glass. The caramel-to-beige graduation in the glass softens the light before it reaches the room, and the integrated pull cord gives the piece an older, easier manner. It is a fitting for warming up a plain wall.

A walnut wall light with a caramel blown glass shade

At 18 cm wide and 21 cm high, this walnut wall light stays small while still holding a wall, which is the balance that matters in a British room where the furniture is close and the ceiling is seldom generous. The solid wood base in a walnut finish is what carries the piece; the curved arm in a gold finish lifts the shade away from it, and the blown glass shade graduates from caramel into beige so that the light arrives already warmed. A walnut wall light of this kind is meant to be handled as much as looked at. The detail that makes the fitting is the integrated pull cord switch, which lets you turn the light on and off at the fitting itself instead of crossing the room for a wall plate. Anyone who has felt along a wall for a switch in the dark will understand the value of it. A walnut wall light of this size goes naturally above an armchair, a chest of drawers or a desk, and because the footprint is modest it repeats well: one either side of a bed, or either side of a chimney breast, is the arrangement British buyers look for most. In a room of mixed periods it does useful work, holding an older piece of furniture and a plainly painted wall in the same conversation.

Specifications of the walnut wall light

This walnut wall light takes one standard E26/E27 Edison screw (ES) lampholder for a lamp of 40 W maximum, incandescent or the LED equivalent. The lamp is not supplied, which leaves the colour temperature in your hands; against a caramel shade a warm white lamp carries the softness further, while a more neutral lamp lets more of the glass itself show. The fitting is compatible with a dimmer, not included, so the same light can serve as task light in the afternoon and ambient light at night, provided the lamp you choose is itself dimmable. This walnut wall light is rated for damp locations, which brings a bathroom or a covered outdoor space into range as well as a bedroom. The overall size of 18 cm by 21 cm puts it in the middle of the range, close to a conventional small wall light, and because nothing hangs below the body there is no low point to allow for under a 2.4 m ceiling. That matters more than it sounds in a British bedroom, where a walnut wall light often has to share a wall with a picture rail or a sloping ceiling. The pull cord adds no electrical complication, since it works in series at the fitting, but do check that it falls on the side you expect before the backplate is screwed down. As with any fitting on an old wall, ask your electrician to confirm the fixings into the substrate you actually have rather than the one the plans claim.

Placing a walnut wall light in a room

Read the room before choosing the lamp. In a bathroom, the damp rating lets this walnut wall light sit near a mirror, and a single warm lamp beside the glass is kinder than a bright fitting overhead. In a bedroom, mount the walnut wall light just above shoulder height when seated, so the pull cord falls within reach from the pillow and the glass stays out of your line of sight. Over a desk, keep the fitting to the side of your working hand. If you plan to dim, buy a dimmable lamp and a compatible dimmer together, since a dimmable lamp alone will not vary and a dimmer alone will buzz. Keep the pull cord of the walnut wall light on the outer side, so the lead does not fall across the glass. Keep the glass clean with a dry cloth and leave the wood to settle in colour as wood does. Two of these, carefully levelled at the same height, look considered in a way one never quite does.

Solid wood in a walnut finish, caramel blown glass, a curved gold arm and a pull cord: this walnut wall light gathers a good deal of charm into 18 cm by 21 cm. Fit one above a chair, or a pair either side of a bed, and choose a warm lamp to finish it.

Light decides whether a room makes you want to stay. Each light is chosen for its material and for what it does with it.

    How we choose a light

    A light for every room

A hallway, a bedhead or a table each call for a different light. Our collections are organised by use.

    Stone, not an imitation

The market is full of painted resin that imitates marble. Our travertines and alabasters are cut from stone: no two pieces are identical.

A third of our lights have a built-in LED: nothing to buy. The others take a standard bulb, which is generally not supplied. The bulb cap type is on the product page.

Will my stone light be identical to the photo?

    keyboard_arrow_down

No, and that is deliberate: travertine and alabaster are real stones, and the veining differs from one piece to the next. The shape and dimensions, however, are as specified.

Can I install a light in a bathroom?

Some models. The ‘bathroom zone rating’ entry appears on the relevant product pages — without it, keep the light for dry rooms.
