Description
keyboard_arrow_downThis alabaster pendant light is large enough to hold a room. Its shade is real alabaster, carved from the solid, on a frame of matt black metal, and the integrated LED gives a soft, even light. It is chosen by those who want a strong, sculptural and honest fitting.
The shade of this alabaster pendant light is real alabaster, carved from the solid, a translucent stone that turns an LED into a gentle glow. The frame is in matt black metal, which gives the pale stone a firm outline and keeps the whole fitting from looking soft. It is offered in three diameters, 60, 70 and 80 cm, all with the same height of 53 cm. That consistent height is a useful detail: the three sizes keep one proportion, and a larger room simply takes a wider disc of stone. An alabaster pendant light of this scale is a feature in its own right, not an accessory, and it asks to be hung over something: a dining table, a wide staircase, a lounge with a generous ceiling. By day it reads as a pale volume, and in the evening it lights from within. An alabaster pendant light of this size also changes with the hour, from a pale mass at midday to a lantern after dark. The veining and tone of the stone vary from one piece to the next, because alabaster is a natural material, and no two shades are alike. Set two alabaster pendant lights side by side and you see it at once: the same cut, and two different stones. That variation is the point of buying stone rather than a copy of it: the fitting you receive is its own object, and it will not be repeated in the next house.
The light source of this alabaster pendant light is an integrated LED, so there is no bulb to choose and no cap to match. It works with a dimmer, not included, so you can lower the light for the evening and raise it for a meal. A low setting suits the stone best, since the veining shows most when the light is soft. This alabaster pendant light installs on the ceiling with integrated wiring, and an electrician is recommended for the connection and the fixing. A stone shade of 60 to 80 cm calls for a sound fixing point, so ask your electrician to check the ceiling before the fitting goes up. Stone of this size is a serious load for a single fixing, and a joist or a rated ceiling box is the right answer. The same care applies to any alabaster pendant light of 60 cm or more. It is made for interior use in a dry atmosphere, away from steam and damp, which protects both the stone and the metal. As the veining, the tone and the translucency vary from one piece to another, the shade you receive may differ a little from the photographs, and that is a sign of the stone rather than a fault. The choice is easy: three diameters, one height, one finish. The larger the room, the larger the alabaster pendant light you will want.
Height is the question to settle first. The fitting is 53 cm high, and under a 2.40 m ceiling even a canopy fixed flush would leave its lowest point at about 1.87 m, which is below the 2.10 m that is the usual guideline for a place where people walk. An alabaster pendant light of this size therefore belongs over a dining table or a bed, in a stairwell, or in a room with a higher ceiling, not in a hallway. For the diameter, 60 cm suits a table for four to six, 70 cm a wider table or a lounge, and 80 cm the largest rooms. The height is the same in all three sizes, so a smaller diameter does not buy you more headroom. Leave a clear margin between the edge of the shade and the nearest wall or cupboard door. Choose a warm colour of LED for this alabaster pendant light if you can, since it brings out the veining, and pair the fitting with oak, plaster or linen. Hung centrally, the alabaster pendant light gives a room a fixed point from which the furniture can be arranged.
Real alabaster, matt black metal and a built-in LED: this alabaster pendant light is a large, quiet fitting with a strong outline. Choose the diameter that fits your room and have it installed by an electrician.

A hallway, a bedhead or a table each call for a different light. Our collections are organised by use.
The market is full of painted resin that imitates marble. Our travertines and alabasters are cut from stone: no two pieces are identical.
