This wood wall light is a small directional spot: a cylindrical shade in fluted solid wood on a metal arm, which turns to put the light where it is wanted. At 8 cm wide and 16 cm high it slips into tight places without losing its character. A wood wall light that is discreet, precise and warm at the same time.

An articulated wood wall light in fluted solid wood

The shade of this wood wall light is turned from solid wood and cut with fine vertical flutes, so the cylinder reads as a made object rather than a moulding. Ribbed, fluted, reeded: the British trade uses all three words for the same thing, and the lines do the same work whichever you prefer, which is to catch light along one edge and hold shadow in the groove beside it. Mounted on a ball joint, the shade turns and tilts, so one fitting serves several purposes over the years as the furniture moves. A wood wall light of this format suits a bedroom, a lounge, a study or an entrance, anywhere a small amount of adjustable light is more useful than a lot of fixed light. At an overall 8 cm by 16 cm it puts almost no visual weight on the plaster and disappears entirely when it is off. The electrical cabling of this wood wall light is integrated, and installation is on the wall or on the ceiling, which opens up positions a wall-only fitting would rule out, including the underside of a shelf or the head of a short corridor. Few fittings of this size offer that much freedom, and fewer still look like anything once the lamp is off.

Specifications of the GU10 wood wall light

Technically this wood wall light rests on a standard GU10 cap, the usual spot fitting, which suits a concentrated beam better than a wide diffuser would. That is the usual cap in British spot fittings, so a replacement lamp for this wood wall light is on the shelf of any hardware shop. It takes a lamp of 10 W maximum, incandescent or the LED equivalent, not included, so the colour temperature and the lamp type stay your decision. To vary the output you need two things together: an external dimmer and a dimmable lamp. A dimmable lamp on its own will not dim, and a dimmer on its own will hum and flicker, which is the most common disappointment with small spot fittings and the easiest to avoid. This wood wall light is rated for damp locations, which brings a bathroom or a covered outdoor space into range with the position set against the zones. No weight is quoted, and at 8 cm by 16 cm there is very little of it, so ordinary fixings into a sound substrate are enough; on plasterboard still use a hollow-wall anchor rather than a screw into the board. A wood wall light this small puts almost nothing on the fixings, but a ball joint that will be turned for years deserves a sound one. The fluted cylinder stays legible close up and from across a room, and the slim arm leaves the wood to carry the whole fitting. Wood is the material here, not a finish over something else.

Fitting a wood wall light near a bed or a desk

Treat an articulated wood wall light as an aiming device first and a decorative object second. Above a desk it lights the work surface without taking space on it, and the 8 cm width leaves the neighbouring shelves alone. Beside a bed, mount it high enough that the beam clears your head and low enough that the joint is within reach from the pillow. Because a GU10 concentrates the beam, do not aim this wood wall light out at eye level; turn it down onto a surface or back towards the wall, where the reflected light is softer and the flutes of the shade are shown at their best. Reeded surfaces always read better in grazing light than in a flat beam. For an evening setting, pair a dimmer with a dimmable lamp and keep the lamp warm. In a bathroom, respect the zones and let your electrician confirm the position before the plate goes on. A wood wall light mounted on the ceiling above a basin is another option where the wall is tiled to the top and nobody wants to cut into it.

A ball joint, a GU10 cap and a fluted shade in solid wood: this wood wall light gives real character in a footprint of 8 cm by 16 cm. Fit one above a desk, a pair either side of a bed, or a row along a corridor, and let the flutes catch the light.

Light decides whether a room makes you want to stay. Each light is chosen for its material and for what it does with it.

    How we choose a light

    A light for every room

A hallway, a bedhead or a table each call for a different light. Our collections are organised by use.

    Stone, not an imitation

The market is full of painted resin that imitates marble. Our travertines and alabasters are cut from stone: no two pieces are identical.

A third of our lights have a built-in LED: nothing to buy. The others take a standard bulb, which is generally not supplied. The bulb cap type is on the product page.

Will my stone light be identical to the photo?

    keyboard_arrow_down

No, and that is deliberate: travertine and alabaster are real stones, and the veining differs from one piece to the next. The shape and dimensions, however, are as specified.

Can I install a light in a bathroom?

Some models. The ‘bathroom zone rating’ entry appears on the relevant product pages — without it, keep the light for dry rooms.
