Description
keyboard_arrow_downThis alabaster pendant light shows real white alabaster in a long, plain cylinder. Its hardware, in refined brass or in matt black, picks out the slenderness of the form, and it suits rooms that like a soft light.
The shade of this alabaster pendant light is real white alabaster, a translucent stone that doubles as the diffuser. It is cut into a long, clean cylinder, 25 cm high and 10 cm across, and the narrowness of the form is its quiet strength. The hardware comes in two finishes, refined brass or matt black, so that you can match it to the taps, frames or switches in your room. Brass warms the stone and suits timber and linen, while matt black gives a graphic line against a pale wall. An alabaster pendant light of this proportion is a vertical accent rather than a mass, and it works in several ways: alone over a bedside, in a row of three or five over a table or a counter, or in pairs either side of a window or a mirror. The veining and tone of the stone vary from one cylinder to another, because alabaster is a natural material, and when several hang together the small differences make the group look gathered rather than manufactured. An alabaster pendant light in a group gets better with number: five cylinders show five slightly different stones. Because the shade is the diffuser, the light is not interrupted by a second layer of glass or fabric, and the glow comes from the stone itself. By day the stone is a pale, matt cylinder, and in the evening it lights up with a soft, even glow.
This alabaster pendant light takes an E14 small Edison screw (SES) cap, with a bulb that is not included, and the maximum is a 15 W LED. The recommended colour temperature is a warm white at 3000 K, which suits the pale stone. The light can be dimmed, provided that you use a dimmable bulb and a dimmer switch. The cable of this alabaster pendant light is 150 cm long and adjustable as you need, and the wiring is recessed at the ceiling. It is made for indoor use, on a supply of 110 to 240 V AC. We recommend a qualified electrician for the connection. Alabaster is a soft stone, so wipe it with a dry cloth and keep it away from damp, which means a bedroom, a hall or a dining room for this alabaster pendant light rather than a bathroom. Because the cap is small, the bulb is slim, and the choice of a small LED keeps the cylinder lit evenly along its length. These figures leave you with two choices to make, the finish of the hardware and the number of cylinders, and the rest is a matter of height.
The narrow cylinder lends itself to repetition. Three of these alabaster pendant lights at different heights over a console or a counter make a loose, vertical group; five at the same height over a long table make a line. In a pair, they frame a bed or a mirror, and since each cylinder lights only a small area, a pair gives gentle light to both sides. Under a 2.40 m ceiling, 25 cm of height in an alabaster pendant light is easy to live with, but a long cable is not: the usual guideline puts the lowest point of a pendant at 2.10 m above the finished floor where people walk, so set the drop short, and keep the long drops for a table or a stairwell. A warm, dimmable bulb is the right choice for an alabaster pendant light, since it brings out the translucency of the alabaster. Choose the brass hardware for a warm scheme and the matt black for a graphic one, and keep the stone dry. An alabaster pendant light only 10 cm across takes very little space, so three or five can hang over a console without hiding the wall behind. Over a bed, keep the lowest point above head height when you sit up, and the cylinder will light the pillow without glare. Brass hardware and matt black hardware can be mixed in the same room if you keep each group to one finish.
Real white alabaster, refined brass or matt black and a slim cylinder: this alabaster pendant light is a small, gentle fitting. Choose your finish, hang it alone or in a row, and let the stone glow softly.
