Description
keyboard_arrow_downA cylindrical travertine wall light offers another way of reading stone: in the round, from top to bottom. This model, 6.5 cm wide and 32 cm high, throws light in two directions. Its body of sand-toned travertine stands on a base of solid walnut.
The characteristic that sets it apart is the two-way lighting: light leaves the cylinder upward and downward at once. On the wall it draws two luminous arcs that underline the vertical of the surface and bring out the texture of the stone. This travertine wall light does not merely light a point, it shapes the space around it by working with shadow. The cylindrical body is cut from authentic travertine in a textured sand tone; every piece has its own shading, its pores and its veins, and resembles no other. At its foot, solid walnut serves as the fixing and provides a warm counterpoint that softens the mineral coolness. A travertine wall light of this size manages to seem both sturdy and delicate, as much through its stone as through the timber at its base. The dimensions, 6.5 cm wide by 32 cm high, give a slim silhouette that slides easily alongside a door, a mirror or the corner of a corridor, and 6.5 cm across is a figure worth knowing in a hallway under a metre wide. It finds a place in a hall, a sitting room, a bedroom or a stairwell, wherever a bare wall asks for some relief. That narrow profile makes it a travertine wall light that is discreet by day and theatrical by evening, and it agrees with a contemporary scheme, a natural one or a spare one without asking anything of the room around it.
To produce that upward and downward light, the fitting carries two standard E26/E27 Edison screw (ES) caps. Recommended output is two bulbs of 40 W maximum each, incandescent or the LED equivalent and not included, so the colour temperature and the brightness of each are yours to set. This travertine wall light works with a dimmer, not supplied, which lets you bring both beams down together. The integrated wiring allows a wall or a ceiling installation with no visible flex, and the fitting is hard-wired rather than plugged in. It is also rated for damp locations, so it can be used in a bathroom or in a covered outdoor position, which is a valuable quality for a body of stone; the siting against the zones remains your electrician to judge. In a bathroom, this travertine wall light saves you choosing between a natural stone and equipment fit for a damp room. Compliance with the standards of North America, Australia, Europe and the Middle East completes the picture and eases its use on varied projects. The choice of standard caps has one last advantage: bulbs are found anywhere, replaced without difficulty, and leave the atmosphere entirely to you. Natural stone, solid timber and careful engineering therefore make this travertine wall light as practical as it is decorative. A cylinder of solid stone on a timber base is not a hollow fitting, and the fixing should be chosen accordingly, which is worth saying plainly to whoever drills the wall before the box is opened.
The strength of two-way lighting is that it adapts to the room. A beam upward lights the ceiling and visually enlarges the space, which is useful under a 2.4 m ceiling; a beam downward underlines the wall and leaves a halo at eye level. By choosing bulbs of different temperatures you get two layered atmospheres, softer above and warmer below. Set your travertine wall light at roughly eye level so the lower light stays comfortable, and leave room above so the upper beam can spread. In a pair, either side of a bed, a mirror or a chimney breast, it composes an elegant symmetry, and the pair is the usual order. In a run along a corridor it paces the walk. A travertine wall light this slim repeats without weighing down a wall, so three or four in sequence will not crowd the space. Pale matt walls bring out the play of light, while a dark render makes it more dramatic. There is no harm in pairing it with other natural materials, timber or linen, for a coherent room. A travertine wall light of this kind copes with modest spaces, which makes it a useful answer in a small flat.
Slim, two-way and rated for damp locations, this travertine wall light stages the stone with a light that rises and falls. Fit it to your wall and watch the shadows come to life.
