Description
keyboard_arrow_downMore generous than the thread-slim models, this black alabaster wall light is 20 cm wide by 45 cm high and stands as a piece with real character. Its shade in stone carved from the solid block turns light into a milky halo. The matt black metal holds it all together with a graphic composure.
This alabaster wall light is marked out by its volume: 20 cm wide and 45 cm high give it the presence of a proper element of the room rather than an accessory. Real alabaster, carved from the solid block, offers a wider diffusing surface on which the light can spread and bring out the drawing of the veins. Tone, veining and translucency vary from one example to the next, so your fitting will be the only one of its kind. That characteristic makes every alabaster wall light a singular object, impossible to reproduce exactly. In a sitting room it goes readily above a console or a sideboard, at a good distance from the other lighting. In a bedroom, a pair either side of the bed makes a restful symmetry and does better work than two bedside lamps, which is why the pair is the usual order. An alabaster wall light of this reach plays an almost sculptural part: unlit it reads as a mineral form on the wall; lit, it becomes a hearth of light. The matt black of the frame underlines that graphic dimension and agrees with the joinery, fittings and dark accessories already in the room. On a white wall the contrast is direct; on a dark wall the stone seems to float in the gloom like a moon. That is why this alabaster wall light is chosen as much for its decorative part as for its light. Anyone who would rather own one considered fitting than three ordinary ones will see the argument straight away.
The standard E12 or E14 small Edison screw (SES) cap is one of the real advantages of this alabaster wall light, because it takes bulbs that are easy to find in any British shop. You keep the freedom to choose the shape, the output and the colour temperature that suit your room, within the limits of the fitting. A warm bulb brings out the depth of the stone; a more neutral one reveals more of its contrasts. The matt black metal, plain and without reflections, frames the diffuser and reinforces the contemporary cast of the whole. This alabaster wall light runs at AC 110-240V, which keeps it usable on most supplies. Its wiring is integrated, but an electrician remains the recommendation for a tidy connection, and the fitting is hard-wired rather than plugged in. It is intended for indoor use in a dry atmosphere, so a lounge, a bedroom, a study or a landing suits it well, while a bathroom does not. Choosing an alabaster wall light 20 cm wide also means backing a fitting that acts as a focal point, able to carry a bare wall on its own. The pairing of natural stone and black metal answers a strong current in British interiors, that of raw materials and simple shapes, and it settles easily into a mineral, japandi or contemporary room. A shade of stone at this size is worth mentioning to whoever drills the wall, since the fixing has to suit the mass hanging above it.
Before drilling, decide what the light is for: atmosphere, circulation, or a decorative accent. An alabaster wall light 45 cm tall lends itself above all to atmosphere, since light filtered through stone is soft and enveloping, a long way from the crispness of a downlight. For a settled result, leave clear space around it so the silhouette can breathe and the halo can spread. In a stairwell or a hall, several in a line at regular intervals lead the eye and pace the volume. Against a pendant light, an alabaster wall light of this size saves the ceiling and leaves the height free, which is an advantage in a low room. Leave the connection to an electrician, and accept small variations of veining if you fit several side by side. That slight natural asymmetry gives a composition life and is a reminder that stone is never uniform. A piece this expressive deserves a clear wall, so give it a position where nothing competes with it.
Substantial without excess, this black alabaster wall light unites real stone with a matt metal to give a soft light, a free choice of bulb and genuine character. It is waiting for the wall you have in mind.
