Slender and restrained, the alabaster wall light comes in two heights and gives the light of an integrated LED. Its veining, its tone and its translucency vary from one piece to the next.

An alabaster wall light carved from the solid

What separates one alabaster wall light from another is the way the stone has been worked. Here the shade is real alabaster carved from the solid, not an imitation and not a reconstituted material. That method gives the stone a dense presence, a smooth surface and a soft brightness once the source is on. Because it comes from the ground, every piece is singular: the veining, the tone and the translucency vary from one example to the next, which is a guarantee of authenticity rather than a fault. On a wall, this alabaster wall light reads as a vertical sculpture, crisp and organic at the same time. Its simple shape leaves the material in charge, and the material is what you look at first. At 12.7 cm wide, this alabaster wall light is easy to place, including in tight spaces such as a hallway, an entrance or a stairwell. In the taller or the shorter version it organises the wall and leads the eye. The light that passes through the stone softens the outlines and makes a hushed atmosphere, right for a living room with some character, a calm bedroom or a reading corner. An alabaster wall light well chosen gives a room an immediate measure of quiet and substance.

Brass, LED and supply: the alabaster wall light in detail

The brass structure of this alabaster wall light carries the stone precisely. Its restrained finishes bring a gold warmth that answers the tone of the alabaster and give the fitting a timeless bearing. The integrated LED source is part of the fitting, which saves you finding and replacing a bulb. This alabaster wall light therefore works with no accessory at all, for a warm, steady light in keeping with the colour of the stone. The product runs on an alternating supply of 110 to 240 V and is dimmer compatible, the dimmer sold separately, so the level can follow the hour and the use. Two sizes of the alabaster wall light are available: 12.7 cm wide by 35 cm high, or 12.7 cm wide by 63 cm high, to suit a low wall as well as a generous ceiling height, and in a room of 2.4 m the taller one wants its clear run measured first. The wiring is integrated and an electrician is recommended for the installation. At 63 cm, carved stone is substantial, so agree the fixing before the back box is set. This alabaster wall light is designed for indoor use in a dry atmosphere, so avoid wet rooms and anywhere exposed to moisture. The brass takes on a natural patina with time while the stone keeps its original appearance.

Fitting your alabaster wall light indoors

Start by choosing the height. The 35 cm version suits a bedroom wall, a passage or the space above a chest of drawers, while the 63 cm version is for tall walls, generous living rooms and entrances with some presence. Plan a suitable supply point and leave the connection to an electrician, as the maker recommends, since a fixed fitting of this kind is not work to improvise. Avoid damp rooms, since this alabaster wall light is made for dry atmospheres and the stone does not take moisture well. On decoration, an alabaster wall light goes with mineral plaster, pale timber, heavy linen or earth tones. Fit it alone for a sculptural reading, or repeat it along a long wall for an even rhythm of light that no single fitting can give. Bear in mind that no piece looks exactly like another: when you order two, the difference in veining is part of the charm and gives the arrangement its character. A dimmer finally allows a very low light for the evening, when the alabaster wall light no longer needs to illuminate but simply to accompany. In a hallway, two or three pieces at regular intervals make an elegant lit route, and in a living room one is enough to mark a corner. Keep a comfortable distance from the furniture beside it so the stone has room to breathe, and mark the centre line on the wall before any hole is cut, since an alabaster wall light of this weight is not something to move twice.

Real alabaster, brass and an integrated LED: this alabaster wall light brings a soft light and a rare material indoors.
